The world is getting hotter. With the Arabian Spring behind us and a conflict with Iran in front of us, I had some thoughts in respect to war.
And immediately came to my mind these images of WWII HBO movie. The Pacific is based on the books "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge and "Helmet For My Pillow" by Robert Leckie.
"If you are young and did not live through the Cold War, or if you've been carried away by life recently and have forgotten what nuclear war is, refresh your memory. Read Strieber and Kunetka's 1984 novel "Warday," or Jonathan Schell's book-length essay "The Fate of the Earth" (1982 ). Watch the film "The Day After," from 1983. These works paint a picture of a very dire future that scientists agree probably falls short of the reality. That is what is at stake. So, what is to be done to avert a disaster that, were it to spiral out of control, would definitely kill hundreds of thousands of people, maybe billions, and possibly destroy life itself?" The Middle East is back on the agenda. Israel's military chief of staff reportedly warned this week that an increase in rocket attacks against Israel might lead to a large-scale military operation in Hamas-controlled Gaza. Here is what a young marine says after watching The Pacific on HBO:
I am a former Woman Marine who never saw any combat. I have read all three of the books and cannot say enough how much I recommend each fan of the series does so. It has changed forever my views on the war and the men who fought them. Robert Leckie's book especially, to me, the best book I have ever read. I am a Classicist and Leckie's book read like a new version of Homer's Odyssey. Incredible. I felt like I was with him in the Pacific. E. Sledge's book was a masterpiece. Hugh Ambrose's book was wonderful and he is every bit as brilliant a writer as his late father. I can't thank Mr. Hanks and Mr. Spielberg enought for bringing these three books into my life. I feel my life is more enriched and that I am a better person just for having read them.
